On January 28, 1985, more than forty of the world’s most celebrated artists gathered at A&M Studios in Los Angeles to record “We Are the World,” a landmark charity single written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones, created to support famine relief in Africa. Organized immediately after the American Music Awards to ensure the participation of leading musicians, the all‑night session brought together icons such as Harry Belafonte, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, and Bob Dylan, united under Jones’s famous instruction: “Check your ego at the door.”

The song became one of the most iconic humanitarian recordings in music history, ultimately raising more than $100 million in support of humanitarian, community, and famine‑relief initiatives through the newly created United Support of Artists for Africa (USA for Africa), which was established to channel these resources as grants to civil society and community organizations across the continent and in the United States.
