The Réseau des Femmes Engagées de Kédougou, in partnership with TrustAfrica, organized a powerful citizen march as part of the global campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The march brought together diverse actors committed to raising awareness about the alarming prevalence of violence—including digital violence—and the urgent need to protect women working in mining sites. Through impactful messages displayed on banners and T-shirts, the initiative aimed to break the silence surrounding violence in the mines and highlight the vulnerability of women in a sector where they remain marginalized.
Despite a mining code that guarantees equal opportunities, women in Kédougou face persistent challenges: poverty, exploitation, and multiple forms of violence. They represent only 8.4% of employees in mining companies and are almost absent from access to mining titles.
This march is a call to action for inclusive policies, stronger protections, and greater representation of women in the mining sector. Together, we can ensure that equality is not just a principle but a reality.
