January 24th, 2023

On November 6-7, 2012, TrustAfrica and the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities held a dialogue on “The Future and Relevance of Nigerian Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions: Towards Higher Education Transformation.” The two-day meeting brought together Vice Chancellors and other senior administrators of universities, staff unions (Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and National Association of Academic Technologists, NAATS), civil society groups and representatives of the private sector and the media to share experiences and best practices of good governance in higher education. Highlights of the conference included a keynote address by the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i and Distinguished Senator Uche Chukwumerije, Chair Senate Education Committee.

The meeting also served as a forum for discussing the preliminary findings of the scoping study commissioned by TrustAfrica on higher education in Nigeria.

The African Higher Education Dialogues are a three-year project designed to offer a platform for the strengthening and transformation of higher education in Africa. The three strategic imperatives of the project include:

  • Build an effective platform for engaging in the formulation and implementation of higher education policies in Africa;
  • Initiate and sustain policy dialogues among key stakeholders in Africa; and
  • Leverage resources for higher education transformation in Africa.
