As part of TrustAfrica’s ongoing staff retreat in Cape Verde, we had the distinct honor on 8 July 2026 of meeting with His Excellency Pedro Pires, former President of the Republic of Cape Verde, at his Institute. This special encounter was made possible thanks to the kind facilitation of H.E. Víctor Manuel Barbosa Borges, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities.
Drawing on his remarkable journey as a liberation leader and statesman, President Pires shared profound reflections on leadership, history, and the enduring relevance of Pan-Africanism. The exchange offered a rich learning experience, highlighting the values of visionary leadership, commitment to democratic governance, and the importance of grounding Africa’s future in its historical struggles and achievements.
This moment of dialogue was both inspiring and thought-provoking, reinforcing the importance of intergenerational learning and African-led knowledge production. It further deepened our collective reflection on how institutions like TrustAfrica can continue to contribute to building resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking societies across the continent.
