[PRESS RELEASE] The National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and TrustAfrica, Senegal will be holding a National Summit on Tertiary Education in Ghana on the theme: “Crafting a National Vision and Plan for the 21st Century” from November 2 to 4, 2016, at the Mensvic Hotel in Accra. The Summit is a follow-up on the National Policy Dialogue on Tertiary Education held in 2013.
The goal of the National Summit is to offer an opportunity for stakeholders to make recommendations to inform a draft National Vision and Plan for Tertiary Education; to propose an implementation framework; and to provide input into the current efforts at developing a long-term national development plan for the nation.
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Hon. Minister of Education is the Special Guest of Honour.
Speakers at the programme include Prof. C.N.B Tagoe, Chairman of the National Council for Tertiary Education and Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana, Prof. Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Education, Winneba, Prof. I. Addae-Mensah, Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Ghana, and Dr. Omano Edigheji, Consultant/Advisor, Africa’s Higher Education Dialogues, TrustAfrica, Senegal.
Commenting on the rationale for the Summit, Prof. Mohammed Salifu, Executive Secretary, National Council for Tertiary Education said: “the Summit will provide an opportunity for stakeholders in education, policy-making, industry, and civil society to deliberate on the sub-thematic areas of the draft National Vision and Plan document which are postgraduate training, research and development, funding, private sector participation, diversification and differentiation among others”.
He also noted that, “This will help in the supervision, management and governance of tertiary education in Ghana and make it more responsive to the country’s development needs in the 21st century”.
It is expected that about 150 participants selected from academic institutions,civil society organisations/associations, think-tanks, ministries/departments/agencies,private sector,Parliament and the media. The public is invited to participate in the Wednesday, November 2 opening session which begins at 8.30am.
NCTE was established by NCTE Act 1993, (Act 454) to oversee the proper administration of institutions designated as institutions of tertiary education in Ghana and to advise the Minister of Education on the development of the institutions.
The NCTE is committed to providing leadership in tertiary education by advising government and all relevant institutions to enhance access, quality, equity, relevance and governance.
