Pan-Africanism, African Unionism and Continentalism: Three Distinct Yet Complementary Ideologies

TrustAfrica, in partnership with the Department of History of Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD), is pleased to invite students, researchers, policymakers, civil society actors, and members of the public to a high-level public lecture on:

“Pan-Africanism, African Unionism and Continentalism: Three Distinct Yet Complementary Ideologies”

The lecture will be delivered by Dr Professor Joomay Ndongo Faye and moderated by Professor Penda Mbow.

As Africa advances the implementation of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, deepens regional and continental integration, and seeks a stronger voice in global governance, this public lecture offers a unique opportunity to revisit and critically examine some of the major intellectual and political traditions that have shaped the continent’s vision of unity, sovereignty, and development.

Although often used interchangeably, Pan-Africanism, African Unionism, and Continentalism represent distinct historical trajectories and strategic approaches. This discussion will explore their origins, intersections, and contemporary relevance, while reflecting on the opportunities and challenges facing Africa today.
