Research Methodology and Grant Writing Workshop

A workshop on research methodology and writing grant proposals was held July 24-28, 2006, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Forty researchers from more than 20 countries took part in this capacity-building component of the Investment Climate and Business Environment (ICBE) Research Fund. The diversity of academic and cultural backgrounds found among these high-profile participants, the quality of the interventions, the sharing of experiences and knowledge and the broadening and densification of this network of researchers were the highlights of this successful event.

Workshop Leaders
Two sessions, one in English and one in French, were led simultaneously by:


  • Dr. Carolyn P. Egri, Professor of Management and Organization Studies in the Faculty of Business Administration at Simon Fraser University (Canada) and a Visiting Professor of Management at Xi’an Jiaotong University (China); and
  • Dr. Marie-France Turcotte, Business Strategy professor at the Management Sciences school of the University of Quebec at Montreal. She is also main researcher at the chair on social responsibility and sustainable development and associate researcher at the Research Center on Social Innovations as well as at the research group on the medication cycle and at the Research Network for Business Sustainability.

The purpose of the workshop was to:

  • Provide training and resources for undertaking research and delivering research methodologies courses at home institutions; and
  • Provide an opportunity to refine and develop potential grant proposals.

During the workshop, participants reviewed the fundamentals of research design, alternative research methodologies and strategies for writing research grant proposals. The sessions were highly interactive, and participants discussed concepts related to their own research experiences and analyzed published articles. Evaluations completed by the participants show that the workshop was well received and that they were able to increase their knowledge. Moreover, whether in the classroom or more informally around the dinner table, this workshop was a place for diverse and intense debate and discussion. In this atmosphere of respect and exchange, the participants had the opportunity to build relationships and networks with their peers.
