Rest in Peace Kofi Annan: A true African giant of global leadership
TrustAfrica learns with great sadness of the passing away of former UN Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize Laurette Mr. Kofi Annan.
Mr. Annan was a true African giant of global leadership.
Said Dr. Ebrima Sall, TrustAfrica’s Executive Director: “TrustAfrica is honored to have been associated with Mr. Annan in his capacity as the Chair of The Elders – the organization of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela. We join the world in mourning his passing away after a short illness and extend our sincere condolences to the Annan family, the people of Ghana and Africa; and the many people across the globe that he touched.”
Kofi Annan was the Keynote Speaker at the historic Africa Higher Education Summit held in Dakar in 2015, that TrustAfrica played a lead role in organizing. Most recently, in July 2018, TrustAfrica, through the Zimbabwe Alliance program played host to an Elders’ delegation led by Kofi Annan on a solidarity mission to support civil society working for democracy and a brighter future in Zimbabwe. This mission became Mr. Annan’s last and his memorable “Third Wave” last public speech of July 20, 2018 at the National Citizens’ Convention in Harare, where he exhorted youth of Africa to shape the destiny of the continent through citizen participation will forever remain an inspiration.
“Kofi Annan stands as a profound inspiration of global statesmanship and solidarity with those working for a better world for all. We will remember his call for citizen participation and his exhortation for Africa’s third wave to be “one of lasting peace, based on democracy, human rights, and sustainable development”, said Briggs Bomba, TrustAfrica Zimbabwe program director.
Rest in peace son of Africa! We will continue the legacy!
