Following Brazil, the country that held the presidency of the G20 in 2024, South Africa has taken over the presidency of this important global body that represents approximately 64% of the global population and 85% of the global economy. The next Summit of the G20 will therefore be held in South Africa in November 2025. This is the first time that a G20 Summit is being held in Africa. This is therefore going to be an African G20 Summit (led and hosted by South Africa), especially as the African Union has, since 2023, become the second regional organisation (the other one being the European Union) that is a member of the G20
The theme around which the Summit will be organized is Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability. In addition to the main Summit, there are many forums organized around the G20, such as the Think Tanks 20 (T20, thank brings together the main Think Tanks of the G20 countries); the Civil Society 20 (C20); the Business 20 (B20); Youth 20 (Y20); Labour 20 (L20)… All these forums have working groups and task forces, produce position papers and policy briefs on the theme chosen by the (South African) presidency of the G20. They also convene before and hold side-events to the main G20 Summit whose agenda and final declaration they seek to influence or inform.
It is therefore a great honour for TrustAfrica to be a member of Advisory Committee of the T20. TrustAfrica is also a member of the Reference Group of the T20 under the South African/African presidency. These are among the most important official engagement platforms of the G20. The T20 brings together leading think tanks and researchers to shape global policies. As an African organization committed to advancing equitable development and social justice, our participation underscores the importance of amplifying Africa’s perspectives in global decision-making processes. The T20 serves as a critical intellectual hub, generating evidence-based recommendations on pressing issues such as climate change, digital transformation, and sustainable development—areas vital for Africa’s progress.
The T20 platform provides a unique opportunity to address global challenges as well as the need to reinvent multilateralism and reform the global governance and financial architectures. By contributing research and policy insights, TrustAfrica strengthens Africa’s role as a key stakeholder in shaping solutions for global sustainability.
Our participation in the work of the T20 and the C20 reflects TrustAfrica’s strong commitment to promoting African leadership in international dialogues. By engaging with the T20, we are not only advocating for Africa’s interests but also driving collaborative efforts that benefit the global community. Together, we can build alliances that leave no one behind and create a future rooted in equity and shared prosperity.
