TrustAfrica expresses deep concern over the disappearance of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan advocate Agather Atuhaire, who were last seen in the custody of Tanzanian authorities. Despite reports suggesting their release or deportation, their whereabouts remain unknown, and they have not been in contact with their families or legal representatives.
We are gravely worried about their wellbeing and safety. TrustAfrica calls on the Tanzanian authorities to urgently provide clear and accurate information regarding their status and location. Until we get proof of the contrary, we will continue to assume that they are still in detention and will hold the Tanzanian authorities responsible for their safety and security.
We demand their immediate and unconditional release.
We are also alarmed by the recent detention and deportation of former Kenyan Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, who was held at Julius Nyerere International Airport alongside other human rights defenders, including Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid, while traveling to observe legal proceedings in solidarity with Tanzanian civil society.
The arbitrary detention and incommunicado holding of human rights defenders is a serious violation of civic and democratic principles. We urge the Government of Tanzania to uphold its obligations under international human rights law, ensure due process, and protect the rights and dignity of all individuals.
We also call on the Pan-African community—including the African Union, regional bodies, and civil society organizations—to speak out and take action in defense of human rights defenders across the continent. Furthermore, we urge the international community to remain vigilant and united in defending the freedoms of movement, expression, association, and peaceful assembly.
