As part of its support towards the implementation of the Open Government Partnership in Nigeria, TrustAfrica is partnering with civil society organizations in South East Nigeria to build capacity, networks and state level engagement. This project on ‘Promoting transparent and accountable governance in South East Nigeria states through enhanced non-State actors/civil society organizations participation’ is being implemented with the Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC).
As part of activities under this project, the partners held two 2-day OGP training workshops between 2nd and 6th July 2018 in Imo and Enugu States respectively. The workshops drew participants from all five South East States, including resource persons form the OGP National Secretariat, development partners, CSOs, media, representatives of government and the various OGP state chapters.
The trainings were aimed at developing the capacity of the relevant actors and CSOs to enable them to effectively participate in the identification, creation, implementation and monitoring of the various State Action Plans and to hold their state governments accountable for the use (or misuse) of public resources. There are positive indicators that some states are willing to implement the OGP framework as three of the five South-East States – Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu- have joined the OGP process. The training workshops enabled participants to share ideas for development of action plans to push advocacy for the remaining two states – Abia and Imo- to sign up to the OGP.
TrustAfrica is excited at the prospects of state-level engagements in Nigeria and support to actors and partners in government and civil society actors to work together in developing State Action Plans and making the State governments more open and accountable to citizens.
