The West Africa Democracy Fund (WADF) has reached a major milestone in its first grantmaking cycle, following the completion of a comprehensive review of applications submitted under its inaugural call for proposals.
Launched in April, the call sought to support initiatives that deepen citizens’ role in governance and contribute to reimagining, renewing and strengthening democratic governance across West Africa. The Fund also focuses on advancing citizen engagement, particularly among young people and marginalised communities, while supporting new ideas and approaches to making democracy work for people.
The first call targeted seven countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.
Following the close of the call, the WADF Secretariat coordinated a rigorous review process involving internal and external assessors. A total of 770 applications were assessed from organisations working to advance democratic participation, accountability, human rights and inclusive governance across the region.
Through a structured assessment process, proposals were evaluated for their relevance, potential for impact and alignment with the Fund’s strategic priorities. The resulting recommendations reflect a diverse portfolio of initiatives aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, empowering citizens and fostering more inclusive and resilient societies.
Applicants that met the established criteria will be recommended to the WADF Steering Committee for consideration and advice before being presented to the TrustAfrica Board for approval.
With grants expected to be awarded in September, the WADF is entering a new phase of implementation. As one of TrustAfrica’s flagship initiatives, the Fund represents an important investment in expanding democratic and civic space across West Africa and creating greater opportunities for citizens’ voices to shape governance in their respective countries.
By investing in organisations championing citizen participation, accountable leadership and inclusive governance, the WADF is helping lay the foundation for stronger democratic institutions and more resilient societies across the region.
